AFRICA: TEN TEAMS INTO FINAL ROUND

The ten teams for the final round of the African qualifiers have been confirmed ahead of the World Cup 2022 tournament. In the second round of the African qualifiers for the World Cup 2022 tournament, forty teams were drawn into ten groups of four teams each. At the end of proceedings, the ten group winners advanced to the third and final round.

For the final round of the African qualifiers for Qatar 2022, the ten teams from the second round would need to face a two-legged tie to determine the five teams that would qualify for the World Cup 2022 tournament.

Morocco are the only team to finish the second round with a perfect record of six wins from six matches. The Moroccans had the maximum of 18 points from their six games in Group I as they showed their supremacy over the other group members namely Guinea, Guinea-Bissau and Sudan. Morocco had 12 more points than Guinea-Bissau in second place at the end of proceedings in the group.

Morocco have been joined in the final round of the qualifiers by fellow North African teams such as Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria.

The other teams in the final round of the World Cup 2022 qualifiers in the African region are DR Congo, Senegal, Ghana, Mali, Nigeria and Cameroon.

In Group J, Benin Republic were in pole position before they travelled to take on hosts DR Congo on the final day of the qualifiers. At the end of the game, DR Congo beat Benin 2-0 at home to usurp their opponents at the summit and secure a place in the final round of the qualifiers in the African section. Dieumarci Mbokani scored the opening goal of the game on ten minutes to give DR Congo a slim advantage at the interval. Ben Malango secured the win for the hosts with the second goal on 74 minutes.
